The Wisconsin Creoles: The Chevalier Family

This family provided more early settlers to Wisconsin than any other. Chevalier descendants have names like Grignon, Bourassa, Langlade, De Quindre, Chaboillez, Gagnier, Gauthier, Brunette, Brisbois, Dousman, Rolette, Baird, La Borde - to name a very few.
Joseph Chevalier (b. 1644 in Normandy d. 26 Nay 1721 at Montreal) married Marthe-Francoise Barton (b. 1653 at Poitiers, France d. 13 Aug 1699 at Montreal). A son. Jean Baptiste (b. 6 Aug 1677 d. 1747) married Marie-Francoise Alavoine Jasmin (born 1690 d. 20 Mar 1756). daughter of Charles Alavoine. a Menominee descendant. and Marie Theresa Machard (b. 1664 d. 10 Oct 172B). The couple had five children in Montreal and the rest at Mackinac where the family was active in the fur-trade in West Canada. Wisconsin, Michigan and the Upper Country. Their children were:
MARIE CHARLOTTE dit Chesne (b. 3 Aug 1710) married Antoine Des Hetres on 30 Oct 1729. Their children include:

-Antoine H. (b. 15 Oct 1737).
-Louis (b. 25 Jan 1731).
-Louis de Conzaque (b. 13 Aug 1736)
-Marie Anne (b. 6 Oct 1734).
-Susan Esther (b. Oct 1743).
MARY ANN (MANON)(b. 22 Jan 1712) married Charles Chaboillez on 22 Sept 1735. Their sons were: Charles Jr.; Augustin; Louis Joseph; and Hypolite - all were fur-traders at Mackinac. Charles Jr. had a Chippewa family in Northern Wisconsin.
CATHERINE died at birth.
MICHAEL JEAN BAPTISTE (MACHAR) (b. 20 Jan 1715) was at the Fort Duquesne battle in 1755.(Also fought in with Charles Langlade and 1200 indians at the fall of Quebec.) His daughter, Margurite Machard, married Jean Baptiste La Horde dit Sans Regret on 21 Jan 1792; the family lived at Green Bay. Machar had two sons and a daughter; he died at a son's house in Detroit. The other son, Jean Baptiste, was a voyageur on the St. Peter's River in 1786-1787, and later settled on Lot #34 in East De Pare, Wisconsin, where he is buried with his wife, Marie Antonatte (Marinette). Three of their sons are:
-Joseph married Lizette, a Menominee Indian woman. Two sons are Alexis and Joseph Jr. Joseph Jr. drew money as part-Menominee in 1849 and drew Pottawatomi money in 1833 for his children, Angelique. Josette and Joseph. He also had a son who lived on the Menominee Indian Reservation as Joe Hart with his wife. PY A SISH.
-Bartelmi (died 1817) married Louise, daughter of WAU BA SISH (THE MARTEN) and had four children: Marinette (b. 1794 d. 1865) who lived for short periods with Jean Baptiste Jacobs and William Farnsworth, having three children with each of them. (Marinette, Wisconsin is named for her.); Louise married Louis Morneaux; Angelique was the first wife of Moses Hardwick; Bart Jr. married PA KA MA SUT in 1855 and had three boys and two girls. One of his daughters, NAW KAY KAW WAW PAS had a son, George Clark. (A Bartelmi Chevalier married 0 PE TAH, a Chippewa Indian woman, on 20 June 1828.)
-Louis Pascal had several children in the Green Bay area, with a Chippewa Indian woman named Josephte: Jean Baptiste (b. 15 Mar 1803); Archange (male) (b. 15 May 1800); and Josephte (b. 8 Sep 1807).
MARIE JOSETTE (b. 26 ~ay 1718) married Pierre Locat, a voyageur. on 21 July 1739. Their children include:
-Joseph Renaud dit Locat (buried 10 May 1754)
-Josephne Renaud dit Locat (b. 1767, d. Nov 1793) married Charles Charly dit Wataps.
-Julienne (b. 1752 d. 16 Aug 1789) married Alexis Bresson.
-Louis (b. 17 Aug 1757 d. 30 Sep 1757).
-Marie (b. 9 Mar 1751 d. 7 Oct 1751).
-Elizabeth (b. 24 Aug 1745) married a Courville at Cahokia, Illinois, in 1760
-Therese (b. 29 Jan 1745) lived at Sault Ste Marie.
MARIE CONSTANCE (b. 3 Apr 1719 4. 1754) married Joseph Ainsse Sr. (Hines) on 30 Aug 1741 and had two children: Joseph Louis (b. 1 May 1744) and Marie Coussante (b. 20 May 1742 d. 10 Aug 1743). Joseph Ainsse Sr. died and Constance had a child with Antoine de Quindre, named Antoine (b. 22 Mar 1749) and a daughter, Angelique (b. 11 Feb 1751), with an unnamed father. She married Francois Louis Cardin on 6 Jul 1751. (see CARDIN family).
LOUISE THERESE (b. 30 Nov 1720) married a Reaume from Detroit. See page 95 for a story about their sons, Louis and Alexis.
MARGURITE ALAVOINE (b. 18 Mar 1723) married Pierre Grignon on 17 July 1738 (see GRIGNON family) and died in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
MARIE MAGDELINE (b. 12 Oct 1724) married Jacques Dumay, son of Jacques Dumee and Mary Brosseau, Ori 21 Jul 1744. Their children include:
-Marie (b. Mar 1743).
-Jacques (b. 25 Feb 1748).
-Louis (b. 3 Feb 1753)
-Pierre (baptized 12 Sep 1755).
-Joseph (baptized 21 Jan 1756).
-Marie Joseph (baptized 19 Mar 1757)

Jacques Dumay was killed by an Indian in December 1760.
ANNE CHARLOTTE VERONIQUE (NANETTE) (baptized 1 Mar 1726) married Rene Bourassa Jr. on 3 Aug 1744; this family later lived in Detroit. Their nine children, all born at Mackinac, were:

-Charlotte (b. 1746).
-Ann Catherine (b. 17 Mar 1747).
-Daniel (b. 8 Oct 1752) had many Pottawatomi children in Wisconsin.
-Charles L. (b. 18 Jan 1755).
-Ann Agnes (b. 2 Mar 1757).
-Louis F.X. (b. 17 Dec 1758).
-Jean Baptiste (b. 1 Jun 1761)
-Angelica (b. 29 Nov 1763) married Alexis Ouellet.
CHARLES L'AVOINE (baptized 10 Oct 1726) died fighting in the Indian Wars in Wisconsin. His first cousin, Charles Chevalier L'Huillier, had some children with a Sioux slave at Rainy Lake, Canada, in the 1740-1750 time period.
JOSEPH MAURICE (b. 5 Oct 1728 d. (b~8) married, as his first wife, Louise Duroseau; his second wife was Marie Josephte Langlois dit La Chapelle. He is buried at Green Bay with her; their son, Bart, had a metis daughter, Marguerite (born Mar 1784).
LOUIS PASCAL (b. 22 Jul 1730) married Marie Magdeline Reaume, the widow of Augustin L'Archevesque, and settled in Detroit. Their daughter, Magdaline, married Charles Gautier de Verville on l Jan 1779. A son, Louis (b. 11 Oct 1751), was in the St. Louis, Missouri, militia in 17B0. A Louis Chevalier had a daughter, Josephte (b. 8 Sept 1807), with an Otchipwas Indian woman named Josephte, who was baptized by J.B. Laborde and later baptized in a religious ceremony by Father Gabriel Richards.
ANNE THERESE ESTHER (b. 28 Mar 1732) married Jean Etienne Chenier.
ANGELIQUE (b. 11 July 1733) married, as her first husband, Antoine Lausson; her second husband was Louis Casse dit St. Aubin. She lived in Detroit.
Jean Baptiste Sr. also had some children with Indian women; one son died in the Indian wars in the Fox River valley. Another. Luc (b. 22 May 1735), had these children with an Indian woman: Jean Baptiste (b. 14 Feb 1785); Margurite (b. 23 Dec 1778); and Joseph (b. 17 Apr 1782).
Francois Chevalier (b. circa 1770) was the son of a Chevalier and a Pottawatomi Indian woman who lived at Milwaukee. One daughter, Susanne, married Pierre Buisson Sr; another, Archange, married Antoine Ouillmette. There was an Amable Chevalier with an Ottawa Indian mother, who traded in Northwestern Wisconsin during the 1785 to 1820 time period. His wife was an Ottawa Indian woman named KI MI QUE NAN.
Louis Cardin was the son-in-law of Mrs. Jean Baptiste Chevalier Sr. who probably died at the Grignon home in Green Bay. In a 1767 letter to Auqustin de Langlade, Cardin wrote, "My wife and I embrace our Mama."
