John Flynn Sr. Hawkins family history summary
The Hawkins Family history is exceptionally well documented from 1772 (Samuel Whitman Ebenezer Hawkins who is designated as "third generation in America", down to the present date One story (from Mary Hawkins, spinster, who lived near Lamar, Mo.), is that "five brothers came to America from Canada." The other version states that the grandfather of Samuel Whitman Ebenezer Hawkins was one of five brothers who arrived on the Mayflower(The ship was actually Elizabeth and Ann in 1635). This version was certified by a television program shown on Educational TV on the Pilgrims and the years they spent, driven from England (because of their religious tenets) to Holland, and eventually sailing to America on the Elizabeth and Ann. One of the families in the TV version was a Hawkins family - and they were doing what Hawkinses and McGavocks have been doing for generations - having a baby, born during the voyage.
S.W.E. Hawkins was born April 22, 1771; he first married in Plymouth, Mass. but his wife's name is not recorded. Then he married Rebekah Jepson (born Jan. 6, 1773) on February 16, 1794. Samuel died in 1828, Rebekah in 1850. Both were buried in unmarked graves in Danville, IL. The genealogy lists such beautiful old names as Dedemia, Alanson, Deliverance, Joel Baldwin, Sabra Ann, Harriet Julia, etc.
Samuel and Rebekah moved to Sunderland, Bennington County, Vermont, arriving February 20, 1794. Moved again, arriving in the County of Cayuga, in New York, on November 17, 1803. In February 1809, they moved to Bloomfield, Ontario County, N.Y. Then on September 6, 1825, they started their move to Illinois, arriving October 27, 1825 at Danville.
One of their sons, Micah Jepson Bates Hawkins married Harriet Matilda Lowe on June 30, 1850. They had six children, among them Joel Baldwin Hawkins, born April 18, 1856 in Kankakee,IL. He married Mary Ann O'Bryan on February 15, 1886. Their children were:
Walter Albert (born 6/24/1889; died 4/611971)
Harriet Matilda (born 8/24/1891; died 9/1971)
Mabel Amelia (born 12/31/1893; died 12/19/1986)

Mabel, Harriet and David Nelson, the Hawkins

Harriet attended school in Kankakee and worked there. On her first trip to Beloit, WI, to visit her grandmother Gallagher (first married to O'Bryan, later to Gallagher; the second marriage produced Pat Gallagher who married Charlotte McGavock, and Katherine Gallagher Turner). Harriet stopped at the McGavock grocery store to inquire directions to Grandma Gallagher's residence. John Francis happened to be in the store, followed her out, took her suitcase and escorted her to Gallaghers'. From then on, this lovely lass was pursued by John Francis, her other suitors left far behind, until she agreed to be his bride.
We are all in debt to Aunt Mabel Davis for an excellent documented geneology on the Hawkins family. A cousin, Merritt Hawkins, who still lives on the Hawkins family homestead near Kankakee, has also gathered much information on other branches of the Hawkins family. Samuel Clemens - Mark Twain is his writing name - stayed at the Hawkins home on his trips on the Kankakee River to Chicago. And President Zachary Taylor married into the family somewhere along the line.
So now we are ready for the history of John and Harriet McGavock and their progeny - long may they live!!
